Having covered some of our favourite AI books and AI podcasts in previous lists, this time we wanted to focus on audio books. Whilst a good book can't be beaten, many prefer to digest their information differently, seen by an increase in audio book sales in recent years.

Below is a list of audiobooks we think you should give a listen:

1) Algorithms to live by (2016) - Brian Christian

Algorithms to live by is an exploration into how computer algorithms can be applied to our everyday lives, helping to solve common decision-making problems and illuminate the workings of the human mind. In this book Brian explains the problems we face in every day life which could be solved through leveraging AI, machine processes and algorithms.

3) Machine Learning for Beginners: A Math Free Introduction (2019) - Konnor Cluster

If you need to learn how to use machine learning, big data, data science, and neural networks but you can’t (or there is no time to) study the complicated math and algorithms behind these technologies, then keep reading. This audiobook from Konnor will assist in the understanding of how ML works, how you can leverage big data, why ML is crucial for Data Science and more.

4) The Big Nine: How the Tech Titans and Their Thinking Machines Could Warp Humanity (2019) - Amy Webb

In this book, Amy Webb reveals the pervasive, invisible ways in which the foundations of AI - the people working on the system, their motivations, the technology itself - is broken. Within our lifetimes, AI will, by design, begin to behave unpredictably, thinking and acting in ways which defy human logic. The big nine corporations may be inadvertently building and enabling vast arrays of intelligent systems that don't share our motivations, desires, or hopes for the future of humanity.

5) The Fourth Age (2018) - Byron Reese

Bryon Reese's 'The Fourth Age' offers fascinating insight into AI, robotics, and their extraordinary implications for our species. This audiobook provides the background information on how we got to this point and how - rather than what - we should think about the topics we’ll soon all be facing: machine consciousness, automation, employment, creative computers, radical life extension, artificial life, AI ethics, the future of warfare, superintelligence, and the implications of extreme prosperity.

6) Deep Thinking: Where Machine Intelligence Ends and Human Creativity Begins (2017) - Garry Kasparov

Garry Kasparov gives his first public account of his landmark 1997 chess match with the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue and explains why, 20 years later, he's become convinced that artificial intelligence is good for humans. Garry became the face of humans against robots at one time and this audiobook documents his thoughts on AI and the processes of his work both past and present.

7) Surviving AI: The Promise and Peril of Artificial Intelligence (2015) - Calum Chace

Surviving AI is a concise, easy guide to what's coming, taking you through technological unemployment (the economic singularity) and the possible creation of a superintelligence (the technological singularity). Calum walks you through some of the aspects of AI that he thinks will benefit humanity and those bits which he thinks are not for us.

"If we get it right, it'll make humans almost godlike. If we get it wrong...well, extinction is not the worst possible outcome"

8) How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed (2014) - Ray Kurzweil

Drawing on the most recent neuroscience research, his own research and inventions in artificial intelligence, and compelling thought experiments, Ray describes his new theory of how the neocortex (the thinking part of the brain) works: as a self-organizing hierarchical system of pattern recognizers. Kurzweil shows how these insights will enable us to greatly extend the powers of our own mind and provides a road map for the creation of super-intelligence.

9) Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans (2019) - Melanie Mitchell

Flavoured with personal stories and a twist of humour, Artificial Intelligence illuminates the workings of machines that mimic human learning, perception, language, creativity and common sense. Weaving together advances in AI with cognitive science and philosophy, Mitchell probes the extent to which today's 'smart' machines can actually think or understand, and whether AI even requires such elusive human qualities at all.

11) Heart of the Machine: Our Future in a World of Artificial Emotional Intelligence (2017) - Richard Yonck

Heart of the Machine explores the next giant step in the relationship between humans and technology: the ability of computers to recognize, respond to, and even replicate emotions. Computers have long been integral to our lives, and their advances continue at an exponential rate. Many believe that artificial intelligence equal or superior to human intelligence will happen in the not-too-distant future; some even think machine consciousness will follow. Futurist Richard Yonck argues that emotion, the first, most basic, and most natural form of communication, is at the heart of how we will soon work with and use computers.

12) Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies (2014) -
Nick Bostrom

Superintelligence asks the questions: What happens when machines surpass humans in general intelligence? Will artificial agents save or destroy us? Nick Bostrom lays the foundation for understanding the future of humanity and intelligent life. The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. If machine brains surpassed human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become extremely powerful - possibly beyond our control.
